In most old gardens in Japan you may find an ancient square shape water well. The top part of these wells are enforced with a so called well enclosure stone or in Japanese izutsu or izutchi. Izutsu or izutchi come in wood but also in hand carved granite and stone and form the foundation for the pulley apparatus or well sweep that was used to lower the baketsu or bucket to haul water from the well to be used for the tea ceremony. The well is often closed with a bamboo lid.
