Highly decorative antique Japanese roof ornament called Onigawara (鬼瓦) or Shishiguchi (獅子口). The Kawara roof ornament belongs to a set featuring the 16-petal Imperial seal, which is also the National Seal of Japan. In Japanese the seal is called Kikukamon (菊花紋).
These ornamental pieces are very rare and special. The seal, also called Mon, was exclusively used by the Emperor of Japan and members of the Imperial Family. During the Meiji period, no one was permitted to use the Imperial Seal except the Emperor of Japan.
Shinto shrines either displayed the imperial seal or incorporated elements of the seal into their own emblem.
