Our story began in the '90s when our founder Maarten encountered the enchanting world of bonsai during lessons with the expert Ernst Mollet. What seemed like a chance encounter ignited a lifelong passion in him. What started as a hobby quickly grew into an insatiable love for bonsai. Maarten had the opportunity to spend a year in Japan, where he had the extraordinary privilege of studying under renowned Japanese bonsai master Nobuichi Urushibata and other esteemed mentors. Their wisdom and guidance revealed the secrets of bonsai to him and nourished his understanding of its true essence.
The real turning point came when Maarten returned from Japan, infused with the rich Japanese culture and a burning passion for high-quality Japanese bonsai. He realized that there must be many European bonsai enthusiasts who shared his enthusiasm and appreciation for these remarkable living artworks. With this vision in mind, he embarked on a mission to bring the beauty of exquisite Japanese outdoor bonsai to Europe. And so, in 1997, filled with excitement, Bonsai Plaza was born—a place where the magic of bonsai could flourish and be shared with others.
