The literal translation of the word "Bonsai" is tree in pot. Bonsai are thus held in a pot. There are many different types of pots in many shapes, sizes and colors but also different qualities. There are Chinese production pots, Japanese hand-molded and hand-made pots. There are even very special pots produced and embellished by artists. These pots can be painted, or there may be provided a motive or a shape by means of special techniques. Most pots are made of clay. Good pots are fired repeatedly at increasingly higher temperatures. It is important that the pot itself does not absorb water, otherwise it could freeze this piece. A good hard pot is baked at 1240 degrees Celsius.
