Character in Bonsai

Needle juniper is striking for its stiff, pointed foliage and upright growth, evoking wild mountain landscapes. It produces a strong, masculine image and is suited to styles such as chokkan (formal upright), shakan (slanting), and rugged literati. Less forgiving than other junipers, Rigida rewards experienced hands with trees of great authenticity.

Cultivation & Climate
Rigida grows vigorously in sunny, dry conditions and is well suited to southern European climates. In northern Europe, it withstands frost but requires protection from extreme cold and heavy snow loads. It prefers open, airy positions and well-drained soil.

Watering & Soil
Needle juniper dislikes constant wetness. A coarse, draining mix is vital. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Feeding
Feed regularly from spring to mid-autumn with organic fertilisers. Vigorous feeding produces strong needles, but careful balance is needed to avoid overly coarse growth.

Pruning & Training
Pinching is less effective than on scale junipers. Instead, trim carefully with scissors, avoiding cutting needles. Deadwood work suits Rigida very well, highlighting its rugged character.

Wiring & Styling
Branches are strong and somewhat brittle; wiring requires caution. Literati and naturalistic styles showcase its wild appearance best.

Winter Care
Hardy but prefers protection from strong frost and winter wet. In colder regions, a cold frame or sheltered position is recommended.
