Character in Bonsai
Itoigawa juniper is valued for its extremely fine, scale-like foliage that grows in dense pads, allowing precise styling and detailed definition. Its vivid green colour contrasts beautifully with aged deadwood, making it especially suited for jin and shari work. Itoigawa adapts well to styles such as moyogi (informal upright), shakan (slanting), and kengai (cascade).

Cultivation & Climate
Itoigawa thrives in full sun and benefits from good airflow. It grows vigorously in Mediterranean climates yet is hardy enough for northern Europe, provided roots are protected from prolonged freezing. In wet winters, shelter from excess rain is important. From the UK to Poland and Scandinavia, Itoigawa remains healthy with proper drainage and frost protection.

Watering & Soil
A free-draining mix (often akadama with pumice and lava) is essential. Water thoroughly during summer, but allow the soil surface to dry slightly before the next watering. In cooler climates, reduce frequency to prevent waterlogging.

Feeding
Regular feeding from spring through late summer builds energy and allows compact pad development. Organic fertilisers are preferred. In northern climates, stop feeding earlier in autumn to avoid soft late growth.

Pruning & Training
Itoigawa responds well to pinching of tender tips to maintain compactness. Heavy pruning is best done in late spring or late summer. Avoid cutting into old wood, as back-budding is limited. Regular thinning improves airflow and prevents inner dieback.

Wiring & Styling
Flexible young branches make wiring effective. Apply wire in late autumn or winter, and check regularly to avoid marks. Itoigawa is especially prized for dynamic jins and natural deadwood.

Winter Care
Hardy to freezing temperatures but best sheltered from strong frost and winter rain. In cold climates, a cold frame or unheated greenhouse offers protection.
