Character in Bonsai
Trident Maple is a reliable, vigorous and expressive deciduous species that responds beautifully to bonsai cultivation. Its leaves reduce well, making fine ramification possible. Each season brings fresh character: vibrant green in spring, calm dense shade in summer, and rich red-orange tones in autumn. With age, it develops a powerful trunk and root system, making it particularly suited for root-over-rock bonsai. Styles such as moyogi (informal upright), hokidachi (broom), and root-over-rock are common.

Cultivation & Climate
Trident Maple thrives in warm climates and adapts well to the Mediterranean regions of Europe. In northern climates, it is hardy, though protection from severe frost is beneficial, particularly for roots in pots. It performs well in the UK, Poland, and Scandinavia, provided it is sheltered from prolonged subzero temperatures.

Watering & Soil
Requires consistent watering during the growing season. In hot climates, daily watering is often necessary. A well-draining soil mix with akadama helps retain moisture without waterlogging.

Feeding
Strong feeding from spring to late summer encourages robust growth. In northern regions, reduce fertiliser in early autumn to allow hardening before winter.

Pruning & Training
Trident Maple back-buds readily, allowing fine branch development. Prune in spring or after the first flush to encourage ramification. Defoliation can be carried out in midsummer in healthy trees to refine leaf size and increase density.

Wiring & Styling
Branches are flexible when young and wire well, though they stiffen quickly with age. Careful wiring in spring or autumn is effective, but most shaping is achieved through pruning.

Winter Care
Hardy to frost, but in colder climates, protect roots from deep freezing. In southern Europe, provide some shade in midsummer to prevent leaf scorch.
