Natural raffia for bonsai| 50 gramm
Natural raffia is a standard material in bonsai work for wrapping branches and trunks before bending. When properly prepared and applied, it helps to support the bark, reduce surface damage and distribute pressure more evenly during shaping. This makes it particularly useful in heavier bending work, on brittle material, or wherever additional protection is needed before applying wire, clamps or guy wires.
Before use, the raffia should be soaked thoroughly in water so that it becomes flexible and can be pulled tight without breaking. It is then wrapped firmly around the branch or trunk in overlapping turns, building up a protective layer over the area that will be bent or stressed. Applied in this way, raffia helps to hold fibres together, support the outer tissue and reduce the risk of splitting during more demanding work.
In practical bonsai use, raffia is especially valuable on junipers, pines and other species where branch work may involve stronger bending, twisting or compression. It is also useful on older branches, thicker sections and material with less elasticity. Combined with sound technique, raffia gives the bonsaiist more control during shaping and helps make demanding work more secure.
What makes raffia valuable is not complexity but reliability. It is a simple, proven workshop material that belongs in any serious bonsai toolkit: easy to prepare, effective in use and directly relevant wherever branch protection and controlled bending matter.
